Best Practice of History Paper

The Lost Cause narrative has deep roots throughout the United States’ culture and education, and this is especially true in the South. This paper aims to shine a light on one of the most influential and impactful drivers of such ideology in the state of Arkansas. An author, historian, public servant, and pioneer of public education in Arkansas, Josiah H. Shinn helped plant and cultivate an Arkansas education system with this racist interpretation of the past at its very core. Exploring his public reputation and credibility, as well as positions of power or influence, this paper seeks to discover how Shinn was so successful in his efforts of directing public opinion and understanding about the Civil War and its cause. Certainly, Shinn did not accomplish this on his own, and understanding who and what other factors aided the effort was seriously considered when creating this research paper. This involved considering the political climate, public sentiment, and effectives of non-profit organizations, like the United Daughters of Confederates, in disseminating their harmful rhetoric, in the state of Arkansas throughout the years. Overall, this paper not only argues that Shinn was an important pillar of the Lost Cause framework in Arkansas’ education system, but it also digs deeper to determine some of the ways he managed to do so.
