  • My role at the Winston Clinic was to room patients for the physician I was working for that day
  • This role included, reconciling medication list, going over allergies, drug and alcohol use, obtaining vital signs manually, and summarizing the reason for the visit that day with their chief complaint and other concerns
  • I was responsible for filing out all the Arkansas Health Department required reporting with communicable diseases, pulling PMP's for narcotic prescriptions, filling out medical record request and faxing them, charting vital signs and importing any outgoing faxes or updates to the patients charts such as new health paperwork or PHQ-9 paperwork
  • I preformed lab draws, culture swabs, flu, strep and COVID-19 swabs, I can run the urine analysis machine, properly collect a urine culture and draw it up
  • I also preformed ECGs, Snellen eye chart exams, Ishihara test checking for color blindness
  • During this role I worked with ages ranging from infants all the way to very elderly patients
  • Every day was a new day and the patients we cared for always presented with a wide variety of needs
  • I loved this fast paced role and was saddened to leave but excited to beginning my Nursing career at UAMS Nursing School

  • Brittany Graves in April of 2018 and was sent to the lab provider, Nexus
  • I was hired by the lab company Nexus, which shortly after my employment was dissolved and Conway Regional who was part of Nexus took over my employment, and the lab at Winston Clinic
  • In a short time the clinic then switched labs to Labcorp, where my employment was then again transferred
  • My duties as the IOP (in office phlebotomist) varied with each employer
  • To state a few of the things I was responsible for during my 11 months there would be far less complex so they were as followed: complete lab draws in a timely manner with accuracy on all ages of patients, have a positive attitude, proper customer service and how to handle unpleased or combative patients, input orders into the ordering system, understand insurance policies, knowledge of ICD-10 codes, ordering supplies for the lab as a whole, proper processing of specimens, knowledge of proper lab draws and correct storage, knowledge of processing urine and stool samples and correct processing containers and storage, manifest reports, preforming DOT drug screens and basic chain of custody drug screens, closing lab and how to properly 'pack out' specimens for the currier to pick up, daily cleaning of lab and stocking needed items, communicating with the office staff about lab issues and finding solutions, assisting physicians in any questions regarding lab orders such as-canceling, adding onto existing order, status of labs, questions regarding specific lab test, work with billing to provide updated test codes and CPT codes to input into their systems, work with billing to provide lab company with patients whose insurance billing needed to be corrected
  • Those were just part of the duties I covered in the time at the Winston Clinic
  • Working at the clinic really provided me with an immense amount of knowledge and had an enormous hand in bettering me as a phlebotomist

  • My job as front desk personnel was to greet every patient, check in those who are there for appointments, update insurance information and ensure copays are collected, giving proper paperwork, making sure HIPPA is followed, answer phones, schedule appointments; these were just some of the main daily duties

  • Our office was short staffed so for several months I had four and from time to time
  • These two to four doctors' patients come to me for checking in and the above described duties as well as issues
  • I acted as the front end of the nurses, I took messages and assist the doctors' primary nurses, I also problem solve and try to assist the patients in all ways I knew how before turning to the nurses-unless it was out of my abilities, privileges or knowledge
  • I was a friendly face to patients and also a helping hand to the clinic
  • Front desk personnel tend to get the brunt end of situations from time to time and the frustration of patients, while also having to know how to remain calm and respectful of the patient as well as calming to them while ensuring proper HIPPA policies

  • It was an absolute demand that I followed each step, technique, guideline, policy, etc., religiously in order to maintain a safe patient care and OSHA approved sterile equipment
